Composer-bandleader Darcy James Argue’s 18-piece ensemble Secret Society is one of the most dynamic and acclaimed large ensembles in jazz, reimagining what a modern big band can be. They perform a set of Argue’s compositions before the Aaron Diehl Trio joins for Diehl’s “Organic Consequence” from his acclaimed Space, Time, Continuum album – the piece arranged by Argue for big band. The concert culminates in the world premiere of A Banquet for the Birds, Argue’s new suite for piano and jazz orchestra – a thrilling new work inspired by Emily Wilson’s acclaimed new translation of The Iliad – written for Diehl, and co-commissioned by 92NY and the NDR Bigband.
